There are two main types of hemorrhoids: internal and external.

  1. Internal hemorrhoids: These are located inside the rectum and are not visible from the outside. They can cause painless bleeding during bowel movements and can prolapse, or protrude, outside the anus.
  2. External hemorrhoids: These are located under the skin around the anus. They can cause itching, discomfort, and pain. If a blood clot forms in an external hemorrhoid, it can be very painful and is known as a thrombosed hemorrhoid.

Additionally, Hemorrhoids can be classified by their degree of prolapse:

  1. Grade I: Hemorrhoids that bleed, but do not prolapse.
  2. Grade II: Hemorrhoids that prolapse but spontaneously reduce.
  3. Grade III: Hemorrhoids that prolapse and require manual reduction.
  4. Grade IV: Hemorrhoids that are prolapsed and cannot be reduced.

Important FAQ’s About Piles

Q: What are piles? A: Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, are swollen and inflamed blood vessels located in the rectum or anus. They can cause discomfort, pain, and bleeding.

Q: What causes piles? A: Piles can be caused by several factors, including increased pressure on the veins in the rectal area due to constipation, prolonged sitting or standing, obesity, pregnancy, straining during bowel movements, and a lack of fiber in the diet.

Q: What are the symptoms of piles? A: Common symptoms of piles include pain or discomfort in the anal area, itching, swelling, bleeding during bowel movements, the presence of a lump near the anus, and mucus discharge.

Q: Are piles a serious condition? A: Piles are generally not considered a serious medical condition. However, they can cause significant discomfort and pain. In some cases, complications such as thrombosis (blood clotting), prolapse (protrusion of piles), or excessive bleeding may require medical attention.

Q: How are piles diagnosed? A: Diagnosis of piles usually involves a physical examination of the rectal area. In some cases, additional tests such as a digital rectal examination, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy may be recommended to rule out other underlying conditions.

Q: Can piles be prevented? A: While it may not be possible to prevent all cases of piles, certain measures can help reduce the risk. These include maintaining a high-fiber diet, staying hydrated, avoiding straining during bowel movements, exercising regularly, and avoiding prolonged sitting or standing.

Q: How can I relieve the symptoms of piles at home? A: Home remedies to relieve the symptoms of piles include soaking in warm water (sitz baths), using over-the-counter creams or ointments, applying cold packs, increasing dietary fiber intake, drinking plenty of fluids, and practicing good hygiene.

Q: When should I see a doctor for piles?
